CDA Prompt: Baby-Octopus-Turtle…

As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve recently started to attend a weekday stream (Chaotic Draw Along) of fun artists where we all draw along together with weird prompts. Last Wednesday, our prompt was given in three parts about 5 min apart… we were to try to merge them. Our prompts were: Baby, Octopus, Turtle…

I have been inspired to do some traditional art lately since Anthony (the host of the stream) tends to do black ink line work with watercolors. So I drew my Baby-Octopus-Turtle on hotpress watercolor paper and inked it with a Pentel brushpen…

I started to paint it Thursday, and had intended to finish painting it over the weekend but the Owls jumped the queue.

For a little behind the scenes… I took the photo of the inked drawing and brought it up in Procreate to figure out what my color palette would be…

I painted it with colored inks and then a little bit of white gouache. I wanted to keep it a limited palette, so I only used green, turquoise, red, purple, and a cool grey. I mixed the colors to get the shadow colors. I mixed the white gouache with the green for the octopus suckers.

I’m really happy with how it turned out, it’s so vibrant!

It was fun to draw something silly and to be able to play with traditional art again.

It’s been raining here lately… so I’m not sure when the next photo shoot of the owls will be… but I do still have that video to edit and I have some other photos I want to post process. So I should either get some rest or get to work.

Until next time…
