Side Quest…

I was playing around with color the other day, after I was inspired by (and reminded how she works) SchmoeDraws. Basically, Simone puts down various reds and then paints over them so that the red bleeds thru into the colors she’s painting. This allows for the whole drawing to feel cohesive.

I thought I’d play. I took a test drawing from Lisa Glanz’s Palette Creator to use as the art to color ( the little girl drawing). Next I took a color palette I created for one of the Procreate Bootcamp homework assignments 1,2, then altered those colors with the hue/sat/brightness tool (in Procreate) and changed the hues around to ones I kinda liked. I decided to play around with these two…

First I played around with the on one the right that had more greens and put various reds underneath. Then I played around with the opacity of the top colors to let the red bleed thru…

I really liked how the colors blended into more muddy colors, the muted and muddy colors really appealed to me, I like to call the colors, Putty.

I decided to keep playing with the another color palette…

I like the red undertone alright, but I really liked the orange undertone better. And that makes since because red is green’s complimentary color and orange is blue’s complimentary color. The slightly tinted grey background helps as well…

Yes, I spent hours playing but to what end, you may ask?

Well, my next homework assignment had me choose three colors to go with a ruby red… so I played. Eventually, I came up with 3 colors I liked with the red, then I added various levels of opacity to an orange under tone and came up with these putty colors…

And from that muddied up color palette… I came up with this drawing…

I realized the other day that I don’t do tutorials anymore. I just do show-n-tells. This isn’t a full on tutorial, but it is a glimpse into my mind. Hopefully you enjoyed it.

Until next time…
