Squirrel Pattern, just 100 more steps to go…

Hey All!

Ok. So I think I’m much closer to something that makes me happy. And I did some resizing tests in Procreate.

First, I did the resizing tests. Procreate has three modes of resizing (nearest neighbor, bilinear, and bicubic) and I can never remember which one to use, as various teachers have suggested different ones. So why not test for myself? For the 50% reduction, I liked the bilinear… but once I got to 25% and 16% they all looked pretty similar digitally…

.

And then I printed it out, because sometimes you are so used to zooming in digitally, that you really don’t know what it’ll look like printed.

.

All of them look pretty good printed. So I think the real lesson here is, keep reducing and rotation down to once… every time you reduce or rotate it’ll get more pixelated – which is what happened to the file I was working on yesterday.

So with that in mind, I continued working on the already pixelated one until I got everything where I want it. Also, as much as I wanted to to have the image flipped every other row, some elements weren’t working, so I kept it all one direction…

.

So what I’ve learned is I really like Asymmetry.

Now I’ve taken the 3000px pixelated file I’ve been working on and am using it as the template/sketch layer in a new 6000px file. I’m bring in the outline layers from my greyscale file, some items still need to be moved. And I’ve already reduced my squirrel and put it in place…

.

Once I put all the outlines in place, then I’ll repaint the base colors, add shadows/highlights, and then add the faces to the Happy Acorns. So just 100 more steps to go, haha.

I really want to put a flower where the ogee curves kiss, but I’m having trouble having the two halves lining up… but I’m going to keep trying, because I really like how it looks. Wish me luck.

That’s all I have for today… see you tomorrow?

Until next time…
