My last post was a test to see if I could upload video… yep I can. So now I thought I’d show you some of the photos and videos I’ve gotten this week and a half, most are before I could really make out the owlets. It all started when one of my neighbors told me that they could see a bobcat in the little cave across the way and that if I got some binoculars I could see it too. I, of course, tried to take a photo with my camera phone… but the cave was too far away to make out anything.
So I went and got out my ‘moon camera‘, my Nikon CoolPix P900 (see a previous post review part 1 & part 2 on this cool camera), and was able to get some interesting pictures. I soon remembered my photography days; going when the light was better, finding a better vantage point, etc. it’s all coming back to me after some 6 years later. The little owlets will be growing up and learning to fly, hopefully they will stay in that little cave so that I can try to document it. Until then, enjoy the journey I’ve been on this week and a half…
First (good) photo (Feb. 20, 2023)… definitely not a bobcat…

Then next time I could get a good photo, I swear I could see some legs off to the side of the cave, still wondering about my neighbor thinking it was a bobcat (Do bobcats and owls get along? Surely not…) … we started doing some research… we think she is a Great Horned Owl and those legs might be her lunch, a rabbit…

I had to wait days between taking her photo because it was cold and rainy and I wasn’t willing to go out there in the rain. So a few days later, the legs are gone…

I found a different vantage point, I think I saw an owlet, but it’s too early to tell…

Feb. 27, I’m still only witnessing possible lunch in the cave with her…

Feb. 28, I happen to catch some action (yes, I definitely think those are owlets!), and also learn the best time of day to get better photos (click to enlarge)…
Mar. 1, I see some fuzzy beings are those owlets?

In this video, I think I see some legs occasionally kicking out from her belly, and possibly a head?
EDIT (Mar, 17, 2024): Due to space constraints I’ve had to pull the video… but here are some frame captures of the best moments of the video…
This video basically shows that I’m crazy, standing out in the cold and wind, she’s cold too… those owlets are not coming out while I’m watching…

Ok… and now I think we are caught up. What wonders will I see thru my lens? Find out next time…
Until next time…
